Scio Rural Fire District Strengthens Connections in Emergencies Due to New SMTA Partnership

SMTA is excited to partner with Scio Rural Fire District in the launch of a new reliable, secure, and exclusive WiFi network partnership that will better enable first responders to stay connected when dispatched to community emergencies in areas with little or no cell service.

Scio Fire teams will soon have access to the new SMTA First Responder Network at no cost to Scio Fire or to SMTA co-op subscribers. This program creates individual, secure, and separate WiFi hotspots throughout our service area powered by the SMTA Secure Router Maintenance WiFi network. Ensuring key personnel are connected wherever they go is another way SMTA is committed to our members and neighbors during challenging circumstances.

Enhanced Medical Support

In emergencies, every second counts. Whether it’s a serious injury on a remote hiking trail or a natural disaster that disrupts normal communication channels, first responders need instant guidance from doctors and specialists. However, the lack of reliable internet, especially in rural areas has made this nearly impossible – until now.

“First responders rely on the same cell networks as everyone else when responding to emergencies. Sometimes, that connection is unavailable in more remote areas,” relayed Fire Chief Kyle White. “This new extension of the SMTA WiFi services to provide a private, dedicated First Responder Network to Scio Fire devices will help our teams remain connected during those crucial, life-threatening moments in the field.”

Increased Safety

The SMTA private First Responder WiFi Network can provide these heroes with real-time consultations and access to electronic health records, allowing for faster, more accurate medical interventions.

“Once the Scio Fire devices are initiated on the First Responder Network, they will automatically connect to any location that has a participating SMTA router,“ stated SMTA General Manager Derrick Mottern.

The partnership between Scio Fire and SMTA is more than community, safety and support. Together we strive to build a stronger future where help is always available and connected.

Separate and Complete Privacy

Access to the SMTA First Responder Network and SMTA subscriber home network traffic will use the same router equipment box. However, the box is split through software to allow multiple networks operating completely separate connections with their own security and bandwidth allocation. This is only possible due to the robust, 100-percent fiber optic network SMTA installed throughout their service area.

Users on the SMTA First Responder Network will only connect when they are on a device issued by Scio Fire and are responding to an emergency call within WiFi range of the SMTA subscriber’s home. They will NOT be able to access or see the SMTA subscriber's network activity, data exchange, affect internet speed or decrease the quality of connection of any kind.
